Ashok Tanwar Career
Ashok Tanwar’s political journey began with his active involvement in student politics as a member of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). His leadership skills came to the forefront when he contested the election for the president of the JNU student union, a key step that led to his rise within the NSUI. In 1999, Ashok Tanwar was appointed as the secretary of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). By 2003, he rose to become its president, leading youth politics and championing student causes across the nation. During his tenure, the NSUI saw notable success, particularly in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, while also improving its standing in the Left-leaning JNU.
As president of the Indian Youth Congress, Tanwar focused on building a robust network for the organization at grassroots levels, initiating activities such as workshops, seminars, and social work aimed at addressing public concerns.
In 2009, Tanwar transitioned from youth politics to the national stage by winning the Lok Sabha election from Sirsa in Haryana as a Congress candidate with a substantial margin. However, in the 2014 election, he faced defeat at the hands of Charanjeet Singh Rori of the Indian National Lok Dal.
In February 2014, Ashok Tanwar was appointed president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, a position he held until September 2019. Amid internal disagreements, Ashok Tanwar resigned from the Congress party in October 2019.
In a surprising political shift, Tanwar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on January 20, 2024, aligning with former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Despite his efforts, he lost the 2024 general election from Sirsa to Kumari Selja of the Congress.
In a full-circle moment, on October 3, 2024, just before the Haryana Assembly elections, Ashok Tanwar rejoined the Indian National Congress, marking his return to his political roots. His political career has been a testament to his ability to adapt and lead across different platforms, always with a focus on grassroots mobilization and social causes.
